Fandom Flakies Box - Lord of the Rings

Fandom Flakies Box - Lord of the Rings

Hi all! Today I have some flakie-filled, Lord of the Rings-inspired polishes to share, so let's get right into it.

The Fandom Flakies box is a relatively new monthly collab featuring core makers Bee's Knees Lacquer & Night Owl Lacquer, along with a guest maker in each box. This box features limited edition flakie polishes themed after all sorts of fandoms. It's available every other month on the second Friday for a week long pre-order.

Fandom Flakies Box June 2018 Details:

  • June 2018 Theme: Lord of the Rings
  • Guest Maker: Illyrian Polish
  • When to Buy: 6/8 at noon EDT through 6/15 at 11:59pm EDT in the Bee's Knees Lacquer shop.
  • Price: $30 plus shipping
  • Also Available: A bookmark that features a hanger resembling Gandalf's staff as well as a noctilucent (lights up under strong light) One Ring!

All photos in this post are taken under artificial light. All are topped with Glisten & Glow HK Girl topcoat (shiny) or OPI Matte Topcoat (matte). These polishes were provided for my honest review.

On to the swatches!

For all three polishes, I'm showing them with shiny topcoat first and matte topcoat last.

Night Owl Lacquer "I Can Carry You"

Inspiration: Samwise

Maker Description: a greyed out blue with copper shimmer, copper sparks, copper/red/gold/green shifting crystal chameleon flakes and red/copper/orange/gold shifting ultra chrome chameleon flakes.

3 coats + topcoat

My Thoughts: This polish has a good formula and is very easy to control. In fact, no cleanup was needed for my swatches. The first coat will look very sheer, but the base builds up quickly. I love the grey/blue base color of this polish. It reminds me of faded denim which is unique to my ever-growing collection of blues. The flakies and shimmer also give it a strong shift at certain angles.

Bee's Knees Lacquer "The Bright Lord"

Inspiration: Celebrimbor from the Shadow of Mordor video games

Maker Description: a bright sky blue with a glowing blue aurora shimmer and iridescent flakes that flash teal/green/blue and gold/blue/green.

3 coats + topcoat

My Thoughts: Good formula on this one too, but it's pretty sheer. Although it built up in three coats for me, I felt it could also be used as a topper, so I'm including a swatch of one coat over black. The rest show three coats on its own. It has a very opal-like look to it, which I love. Again, of all the blues I own, this is unique to my collection.

Illyrian Polish "I See You"

Inspiration: The Eye of Sauron

Maker Description: a deep red wine jelly base with copper/green/blue (at extreme angles) iridescent flakes.

3 coats + topcoat

My Thoughts: The flakies in this polish are gorgeous and plentiful. My first experience with this polish was tricky - the formula was quite sticky and didn't want to go on evenly, but I own (and love) a lot of Illyrian's, so I reached out to Vanessa, the maker, to let her know. She assured me that shouldn't be the case and immediately shipped me another bottle, and I'm happy to report that the new bottle has a great formula, especially for a jelly with large flakies. We think my bottle was a fluke with a possible loose lid, since no one else had this experience and the replacement was perfectly fine. Formula aside, it's a glowing, vampy shade that will compliment any skin tone.

Which of these flake-filled beauties is your favorite? My personal favorite combo is Bee's Knees Lacquer "The Bright Lord" + matte topcoat. Don't forget to grab your Fandom Flakie box starting 6/8 at noon EDT through 6/15 at 11:59pm EDT in the Bee's Knees Lacquer shop.

Kiersten
